PARENT MENTOR

Position Summary:
Parent mentors are first and foremost role models who provide guidance based on a combination of their personal first-hand experience and that of the referred parent. Empowering and coaching parents through the process with DHS, the courts and other members of the team is an important aspect of this work. The parent mentoring program matches parent mentors, who themselves have a past history of addictions and working with DHS, with parents currently involved with DHS due to substance abuse issues. The goal of the project is to support parents before and after recovery as they work with DHS to be reunited with their children.
Education/Experience Required:
-
Experience and knowledge of addiction issues.

Minimum of 2 years in recovery from using alcohol and other drugs

High school Diploma or GED or a high school level writing and reading skills
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Strong commitment to the population served by the program and to seeing parents succeed.

Ability to communicate in a professional manner, both orally and in writing.

Demonstrated advocacy skills.

Computer skills preferred.

Knowledge of treatment and community resources preferred.

Ability to maintain professional boundaries and to handle confidential information

Ability to attend regular scheduled work hours, be punctual for scheduled work hours and meetings, and be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities of the position.

Ability to handle sensitive information and situations in a calm and professional manner.

Ability to work from a strengths-based perspective in motivating parents to make a change.

Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
Other Requirements:

Position requires personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland metropolitan area in a timely manner. If driving a personal vehicle for work purposes must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for state of residency, personal auto liability insurance at $100,000/$100,000 level, and a driving record permitting coverage under corporate auto liability policy.

Blood borne Pathogens training is required on the first day of employment.

Must pass a criminal history check.
